Can’t Stop Her

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

You might remember Tarah Warren. The last time she was at Chesapeake Energy Arena, she was going to start a round of chemotherapy the next day to fight her Stage 4 ovarian cancer. Our photographers had caught a picture of the sign she held up that night, but as she was going through chemo, we didn’t get a chance to meet her after she came to that March game.

Guess who’s in the house tonight – finished with chemo, and having walked just this weekend at her graduation ceremony where she received her Master’s in Social Work:

tarah

Tarah is here tonight with her husband Ben, and I couldn’t have been happier to see them here or more grateful to finally have a chance to meet her. And I know she’ll be giving it all she’s got tonight to cheer our team on.

Behind the T-shirts

playoffs 2013 035

playoffs 2013 025

We’ve shared some great stories (like this one, and this one) about the volunteers who put playoff T-shirts on the 18,203 seats at Chesapeake Energy Arena. But not too long before our staff and volunteers start breaking open the boxes full of gear to put out at the arena, Chris Johnson and his crew at USA Screen Printing are pushing themselves and their equipment just about to the limits to turn around this many T-shirts in what is frequently a very narrow window of time.

The morning before Game 2, Chris and his team opened up their shop for us to take a look into the full process. Blue and white shirts sat stacked on lines of carts. Eight presses spun in sync, laying down ink on the front and sleeve of each piece. Two dryers whooshed with hot air, helping to set the design before the shirts were boxed up.

It was a massive process that engaged every resource the shop had. Even at USA, one of the largest screen printers in the area, running at full throttle still means at least a 12-hour run to print the 20,000 shirts the Thunder orders for each game.

playoffs 2013 032playoffs 2013 028

To give you some context for that window for printing shirts: Until our Round 1 series ended, there were only about 36 hours until the Thunder hosted Game 1 of the second-round series. But Chris and his crew delivered, with plenty of time for our team to put the shirts out on the seats the day before the game.

Take a look at this great video that shows a little more of the process, including a very cool time lapse of the T-shirts going out in the arena.

At least we have a little more than 36 hours between now and Game 5 …

Random acts of Thunder

Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

Our Blue Alliance captains and members have done an outstanding job spreading Thunder pride across our state. They truly have built a community, both within each chapter and among all the members, and we’re very proud of what they’ve done to reinforce the Thunder philosophy of “Team Is One.”

A great example came last night through a story we heard from Matthew Goeringer, the Clinton Blue Alliance captain, about one of his members’ act of generosity.

Through a work connection, Tasha Ball wound up with four tickets to last night’s Game 2 against Memphis. These weren’t just any tickets, though – these were floor seats, just off of center court.

Trying to find a few folks willing to join her in OKC that night, an excited Tasha called several friends throughout the day – including Matthew, who, having had a chance to sit in those seats once before, selflessly declined in order to give someone else the opportunity to experience a game from that vantage.

Tasha found one friend to come to the game with her, but didn’t have any takers on the remaining pair. Rather than trying to sell them, she decided to pass along the spirit of generosity that left her with the tickets in the first place.

On Tuesday night, the Kia Thunder Rewards Zone was buzzing, with it being both the Playoffs and a beautiful evening. More than 600 fans lined up for their chance to win the final 50 pairs of tickets for the game, hoping to see the Thunder in action live.

Tasha picked out a couple of people in line for the Rewards Zone and started talking to them. She asked if they had ever been to a game before; one had, but his friend had not. She waited until the numbers were called for the Rewards Zone winners and saw that the two friends had won a pair of tickets. Tasha went back to them and asked if they’d want to trade tickets with her and get an upgrade. After determining her offer was legitimate, the two gentlemen were thrilled when they realized exactly where the seats Tasha was offering were.

But she wasn’t done yet. Taking the two Love’s Loud City tickets she had traded her extra floor seats for, Tasha flagged down two people who hadn’t won tickets in the Rewards Zone, told them they were going to be able to go to the game and handed them the remaining pair.

As Matthew wrote, “Tasha made four strangers that she’ll never seen again, very happy.”

We are so very proud to see examples like this of our fans so willingly embracing the spirit of teamwork, community and family that our organization seeks to embody.

Together, indeed

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

The message on the T-shirts that filled each of the 18,203 seats in Chesapeake Energy Arena for Game 1 of the 2013 Playoffs may have been a little bittersweet for one of the wonderful volunteers who was helping put them out before the game.20130501-143125.jpg

“Together” is a word that usually describes Suzie, pictured at right, and her friend Janet – but not on that day.

Suzie and Janet have been through nearly a lifetime together. They worked together at the Social Security Administration in OKC for 40 years. They go to church together at Forest Hill Christian, a church which has sent a loyal group of volunteers to help T-shirt the arena every year the Thunder has been in the postseason.

They went through the Murrah bombing together in 1995. And they were almost together in their fight against cancer.

Suzie is a recent cancer survivor, and the only reason Janet wasn’t there with her before Game 1 was that she had just started chemotherapy for her own cancer.

Even without her friend by her side, Suzie still describes the time spent volunteering to help prepare the arena as “fellowship time.” She and many of the church members who regularly join in the efforts see helping the Thunder as helping the community, giving back to a team that she says gives so much to our city.

Both Suzie and Janet are retired, and they want to spend their retirement time giving back and helping others. As she put it, “It gets you out of yourself.”

The group from Forest Hill is back today, laying out T-shirts and doing their part to help the Thunder and its fans prepare for Game 5. Just like our team on the court, they’ll rely on teamwork and togetherness to accomplish their goal. But unlike the players, this group will be done with their task for the day before tipoff.

WHEN SHOULD I GET THERE?
Love’s Thunder Alley starts three hours before tipoff for every Thunder home game during the Playoffs, so get there early and pack in as much fun as you can before tipoff!

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Let’s start with the shirt on your back. Whatever you’re sporting, make sure it matches Thunder blue because that’s what everyone around you will be wearing. (And nothing matches Thunder blue quite like Thunder blue.)

Beyond that, it’s pretty simple. Bring your friends and family so they can help you get excited for the game. Don’t leave the kids at home – there will be plenty of fun for them to take part in, like inflatable games and a basketball skills station. Bring some spending money so you can enjoy the Budweiser Beer Garden, grab a hot dog and get some fresh gear at the Thunder Shop merchandise trailer. Bring your spirit for the team – if you have trouble finding it, let the Storm Chasers, Thunder Drummers and Thunder Girls help you locate your Thunder pride!

Oh, and if you’re going to the game – definitely bring your tickets.

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE TICKETS?
You can roll into Love’s Thunder Alley without tickets and still have an opportunity to see the game! Before you start enjoying the fun, go to the north side of the arena and register for the KIA THUNDER REWARDS ZONE, where we give away 50 pairs of tickets an hour before every game. Even better – PREREGISTER HERE and streamline the process when you stop at the Rewards Zone table so you can spend more time enjoying Thunder Alley.

OK, LET’S SAY I’M AT THUNDER ALLEY. NOW WHAT?
Follow the sounds of the tunes coming from the DJ booth to take you to the heart of the fun. On the east end of Thunder Alley, just off of E.K. Gaylord, the kids can try on their NBA dreams at our sport court, pop-a-shot and basketball skills station. Toward the west end of the block, the kids can also bounce around on our giant inflatable games.

During the first round, FOX Sports Oklahoma is broadcasting the “Thunder Live” pregame show live from Love’s Thunder Alley, so gather ’round the set to watch Brian Davis, Grant Long, Lesley McCaslin and Nancy Lieberman set the stage for every game.

For the car buffs, Chevy will have a car display so you can sneak a peek at their latest models. You can also stop by the AAA booth to make sure you’re covered the next time you take a drive.

Whether you don’t have tickets or don’t miss a single game, Thunder Alley can help you get geared up for the action that’s about to take place inside Chesapeake Energy Arena.

We’ll have more tips and insights on Thunder Alley when the Playoffs begin. But as we conclude the regular season, here’s your guide to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the fun happening now in Thunder Alley!

WHEN SHOULD I GET THERE?
Thunder Alley starts three hours before tipoff, so get there early and pack in as much fun as you can! The only exception is for the game on Sunday, April 7, against the Knicks – with a noon tipoff time, Thunder Alley will open at 10 a.m.

Don’t leave the kids at home – there will be plenty of fun for them to take part in. Bring some spending money so you can enjoy the Budweiser Beer Garden, grab a hot dog and get some fresh gear at the Thunder Shop merchandise trailer. Bring your appetite because the McDonald’s truck will be there with some complimentary snacks.

You can roll into Thunder Alley without tickets and still have an opportunity to see the game! Before you start enjoying the fun, go to the north side of the arena and register for the KIA THUNDER REWARDS ZONE, where we give away 50 pairs of tickets an hour before every game. (And no, that doesn’t go away during Playoffs!) Even better – PREREGISTER HERE and streamline the process when you stop at the Rewards Zone table so you can spend more time enjoying Thunder Alley.

OK, LET’S SAY I’M AT THUNDER ALLEY. NOW WHAT?
Follow the sounds of the tunes coming from the Skullcandy truck on the west end of Reno. On April 4, Skullcandy will also have an awesome BMX show going on, so don’t miss that. Near the northeast entrance to the arena, the kids can try on their NBA dreams on our sport court. On the east end of Thunder Alley, just off of E.K. Gaylord, the kids can also bounce around on our giant inflatable games.

For the car buffs, Chevy will have a car display so you can sneak a peek at their latest models. On April 4 and 7, Hertz will display two vehicles for Green Week – a fuel-efficient Chevy Cruze and a CNG-powered Honda Civic, both wrapped in Thunder colors and logos and soon available to rent as part of the Hertz 24/7 Give+Go program. You can also stop by the AAA booth to make sure you’re covered the next time you take a drive.

Be sure to get your face painted, make some noise with a Storm Chaser, say hello to the Thunder Girls – and enjoy the people-watching and all the unexpected fun that can happen when you’re surrounded by your fellow Thunder fans.

Pregame, preseason

Sunday, October 21st, 2012

20121021-163212.jpg
As I stood above the court, taking in the sights and sounds of pregame warmups at Chesapeake Energy Arena, I was approached from behind by the friendly voice of Sondra, one of our game-night staffers.

She introduced herself, and as I explained that I was drinking in the scene that I hadn’t seen in a few months, Sondra noted that it was her first night to work at the arena.

“I just wanted to be around positive energy,” she explained, so taking a job working Thunder games seemed like the thing to do.

It’s a reminder that someone in the building is always experiencing the Thunder for the first time – sometimes even our staff. That’s why, even though this is our second game this season, everyone in the building knows to treat this game like it’s Opening Night.

Statewide impact

Friday, October 5th, 2012

Last Saturday, the Thunder joined with the Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association to host their annual clinic at Chesapeake Energy Arena (read more here or check out the video). One of our marketing staff members noticed how broad a range of hometowns the coaches came from and decided to map out the cities represented at the clinic.

As you can see in the map above, we had coaches making the drive to OKC from Goodwell to Haworth, and they took tips they got straight from Thunder coaches back with them to help their own teams.

Thanks to the OBCA for helping us reach so many corners of the state!
