Tweets we love

Friday, January 18th, 2013

Fan photos are some of our favorite things to share – but even though a picture is worth 1,000 words, sometimes just a photo doesn’t tell the whole story. Sometimes, your words are just as important as a picture.

With that in mind, here are some of our favorite recent fan tweets that we wanted to share in your own words:

From @emkayvee, who took her students to a Thunder game through the Tickets for Kids program:

 From @sav4okcthunder:

From @chrismlusk:

From @fifthpepper:

And finally, from @kelli_leech:

Not life-sized

File this one under, “We are always amazed by the creativity of our fans.”

Melody posted on Twitter that her aunt hand-painted a set of nesting dolls, featuring a few Thunder players and – of course – an itty bitty version of Rumble. Check it out:

‘Potpourri’

Following tonight’s game against Denver, the Thunder hits the road for a six-game stretch, with 15 days in between games at Chesapeake Energy Arena. To help you get your Thunder fix, take a look at a few stories that you might have missed from the last few weeks …

1. Rumble shows his best side to the camera as he helps kick off the 2012 Sandridge Santa Run:

2. After KD checked in on their great-grandmother when he accidentally hit her with the ball and gave her a kiss during a November game, the Liddell family made up special T-shirts to mark the occasion. All 33 of Jean Liddell’s great-grandchildren got a “KD Kissed My MaMa” T-shirt for Christmas:

3. Thunder fan Mary Rowe sent us this video of her four-year-old grandson, who can not only dribble up a storm, but he can also recite the Thunder lineup (in jersey-number order).

4. The Thunder helped grant a wish for Cody Metz, a Minnesota team who worked with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to make his dream of traveling with the Timberwolves to a road game a reality. We arranged for Cody to watch pregame warm-ups and meet the Thunder Girls and some Thunder players. We also sent him home with some Thunder gear; Cody also is a big Thunder fan. We were so happy to work with our NBA Family to make this young man’s wish come true:

OK – that should get you through a few days of the road trip. Check back for more stories – we’ll put some more in the mix before the team returns home.

Watching the Thunder tonight – er, this morning

Friday, January 11th, 2013

It’s nearly 8 a.m. in Malawi, but Thunder fan Mark Kawanga isn’t just getting up. He’s been glued to the TV for two hours already, enjoying the rare treat of getting to watch his Thunder play.

Katanga, who frequently finds fellow fans to talk Thunder Basketball with over Twitter, posted the other day about how excited he was to see tonight’s game.

In a follow-up email after that tweet, Kawanga said this about why he’s a Thunder fan:

Thanks very
much, I really enjoy watching the Oklahoma City Thunder. Everything
about the team amazes me. The name of the City is the best among all
the Cities in the world, the beauty of the City, the enthusiasm of its fans, the magnificence of the court, the splendidness of the jerseys & last but not least the effort from the players night in, night out. Would like to visit the Chesapeake Energy Arena & watch the
team play one day. Relished game 1 of the NBA finals, I can never get
tired watching that game. Was disappointed to see the team lose the
next games of the Championship Series but I am hopeful this will be
our year. Oklahoma City Thunder up!!

Sounds like a Thunder fan through and through. Mark, if you ever get your wish and make it to Oklahoma City for a game, let us know – we’d love to meet you. In the meantime, we hope you enjoyed tonight’s (this morning’s) game!

Nothing says ‘thank you’ like a giant basketball

Friday, January 4th, 2013

There are ways to give someone a big “thank you” – and then there’s this.

Last month, the Thunder donated 1,000 books to Buchanan Elementary as a part of our celebrations marking the 1,000th Thunder player community appearance. We’ve visited Buchanan in the past for Reading Timeouts and Book Bus visits, but this was something special for us – and for the students at Buchanan.

After they received the books, the entire school signed a giant basketball card thanking the Thunder for the book donation. “Giant” is no exaggeration; take a look at the scale photo, in which the card dwarfs a quarter by comparison. The card is more than three feet in diameter – just a little larger than your typical regulation ball.

We can’t get the font big enough here to be in proportion to the card, but THANK YOU to Buchanan for such an amazing gift of appreciation!

‘Mahwidge.’

If you were at the game on New Year’s Eve, you would have caught the young couple on the Love’s Kiss Cam who took advantage of their big on-camera moment to do a little more than steal a quick peck.

This marriage proposal – and she did say yes, by the way – was about the 15th in-game proposal we’ve had at Thunder games since our first season, estimates Jason, who manages our game presentation.

While it’s probably pretty obvious these proposals aren’t caught on camera by coincidence, what you may not know is that every time someone gets on one knee on the big screen, the community benefits. The Thunder asks those seeking to propose to make a donation to the Thunder Cares Foundation, which supports our community-outreach programs.

So the next time you see someone pulling out a ring box on the Kiss Cam, you can cheer extra loud – it’s for a couple of good causes.

Interested in popping the question during a game yourself? Email Tyler Cofer, tcofer@thunder-nba.com, to set up your big night.
